Is ‘The Strays’ based on a true story? The Netflix movie about a bisexual woman

Among the thrillers that will raise the tension to the max is “The Strays,” a Netflix film that follows the seemingly perfect life of a privileged woman.

Despite the fact that it is a story worthy of cinematic fiction, did you know that it is based on true events?

‘The Strays’: the true story of the Netflix movie

Netflix’s productions based on true stories are on the rise, such as “Ruido,” the heartbreaking Mexican film.

Now it has arrived on the streaming platform “The Strays”, a film that tells the story of a bisexual woman who, although she seems to have an ideal life with her husband and two children, abandoned two other children 17 years ago because of her skin her. colour.

It has not stopped being among the most popular on Netflix in various countries, so director Nathaniel Martello-White was asked in an interview for RadioTimes if the film is based on a true story.

The director confirmed this information, as he confessed that his mother was the one who told him the story that inspired him to make “The Strays”:

“It was the story of a mother who denied the existence of her two black children. She also had two children who were light-skinned, almost white, since she was bisexual. I was struck by those complexities and what would make someone feel they had to deny and erase the his past?

The Other Inspirations Behind “The Strays”

In the same interview, the director of “The Strays” also revealed more of the inspirations that led him to create the story of the Netflix film. One of them was her own mother, who shared some of her experiences as a bisexual woman:

“I had a very interesting conversation with my mother about generational trauma, she’s also bisexual and she was talking to me about her experiences as a bisexual woman and how she’s crossed different cultures and classes and is sometimes seen as almost white, and that it affects way people treat her. And then the odd slip, and then there’s a microaggression or something, which is actually quite offensive or quite shocking.”

Nathaniel Martello-White was inspired by another great reference, because the same year his mother told him this shocking story, the movie ‘Get Out’ was released.

It is a 2017 film that follows the story of a young man of African descent whose visit to his white girlfriend’s family ends up being an unpleasant experience.

After delving into these references and doing the BFI Network program alongside the London Film Festival and Black Star, he knew what he had to do for his first feature film:

“It had to be something really personal that explored race in a really complex way, but also had an element of the genre that made it more universal and expansive.”
