France 2 broadcasts this Wednesday, March 8, the first fiction of Les Siffleurs, consisting of 2 episodes of 90 minutes and written by Nathalie Marchak and Laurent Bourtin (Astrid and Raphael). Directed by Nadia Fares and Charles Berling, this series follows Mariana Kachem, a police officer in charge of investigating the strange disappearance of Lila, a young woman who posted selfies on social media with men harassing her on the street.
So she’ll try to find him as soon as possible, but how is she supposed to find the culprit when every man posted on the @lessiffleurs account is a potential suspect?
Is the script based on a true story?
Although the plot of The Whistlers is not directly inspired by a true story, Natalie Marchak, the creator of the fiction, still drew on real facts to build her screenplay. In a synopsis published on France 2’s website, the writer and director explained that the opening scene of the first episode refers to an attack he suffered at the age of 19.
“I was walking down the street when a car next to me braked“, he explained. “There were three young passengers on board who were amused by my abuse. They blocked my way, came out and stuck to the wall. I was stunned with fear. Literally speechless.”
Fortunately, a police car drove by and scared off the attackers. Of course, this is not the only attack that she had to face in her life, but, unlike the character of Lila, played by Ludmila Makovsky, she never filed a complaint with the police.
By creating Les Siffleurs, Nathalie Marczak had in mind to highlight a new generation of young women who are trying to change the system. The plot of the series is also inspired by real events.
“A young woman published selfies with men who harassed her on the street. I found his approach very daring“, he explained. “I found his approach very daring. I wondered about the risks involved in publicly denouncing his abusers, as well as the consequences of this media exposure for those people.
“What if he disappeared after posting these photos? What if every perpetrator becomes a suspect?” It is on this starting point that Natalie Marshak based the starting point of Les Siffleurs.
