Warning, spoilers. It is recommended that you watch The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 2 before reading this article.
Airing March 1 on Disney+, The Mandalorian Season 3 marks a turning point for its protagonist Dean Jarrin (Pedro Pascal). He wants to reconnect with the Mandalorian faith and go to Mandalore to dive into the living waters, as the faith requires members who have broken the rules by removing their helmets and showing their faces.
In The Mandalore Season 3 Episode 2, Dean Jarrin flies to Mandalore with Grogus and R5-D4, hoping to gain access to the mines and living waters. His journey turns out to be more dangerous than expected. Not that Mandalorian’s atmosphere is toxic, meaning the planet isn’t cursed, but it’s full of horrible creatures.
Captured by a robot monster, the hero Grog asks Bo-Katan Crisis (Kate Sackhoff) for help. During a short visit to the site, Bo-Katan reads an inscription on a stone in the mines, which mentions Mandalore the Great, a legendary figure who tamed the Mythosaurus.
Little is known about him, but he was explained in the game Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars Legends – who are no longer part of the canon of the universe – that he led the Mandalorians in the Mandalorian War against the Jedi.
Upon entering the Living Waters, Dean Jarrin begins reciting the Creed to become a full Mandalorian again. But he is suddenly dragged into the deep. Bo-Katan then dives in to save her. On the way back, he comes face to face with a terrible monster, which is none other than the Mythosaurus.
What is a Mythosaurus?
Creatures originating from the planet Mandalore, the Mythosaurs who served the Mandalorians’ mountains were massacred by the Taung when the latter conquered the planet. The mythosaur skull later became a symbol of the Mandalorian people.
Only mentioned in the Star Wars universe and the Mandalorian series, this is the first time fans can get a brief and terrifying glimpse of the legendary monster. These creatures were said to have disappeared, but Episode 2 seems to prove that they still exist, at least one member of the species remains.

And it could mean a lot for the future of Dean Jarrin and the last living Mandalorians. Recall that in episode 5 of The Book of Boba Fett series, Armorer talked about the prophecy that awakens the mythosaurs in Dean Jarrin:
“Songs of the past prophesied that the Mythosaurus would usher in a new age for Mandalore. Unfortunately, it only exists in legends.”
Clearly, Armorer was wrong. The Mythosaurus still exists, and his appearance in The Mandalore Season 3 Episode 2 seems to herald a new era for The Mandalore. So the Mandalorian people can hope to rise from the ashes, certainly under the auspices of Dean Jarrin.
The latter has a black headlight. This weapon allows whoever wins it after a fight and whoever possesses it to rule over Mandalore. But we will have to wait to learn more about Mandalorian legends and mythos to understand the future of the Mandalorian people.
The Mandalorian series is available on Disney+.
