With the high mass of Hollywood fast approaching (it will be Sunday Monday night), director Joseph Kosinski has revealed what he thinks the Tom Cruise-directed movie really was.
Interviewed by the site VultureJoseph Kosinski makes it loud and clear: Even if Top Gun: Maverick is marketed as an action movie and that he’s won awards congratulating him in that regard, it’s not in his eyes!
“I maintain that the film, for me, was at least what it was originally intended to be, which is a moving, reflective story about one man’s afterlife ritual.”– says the film director.
“I’ve always said that The first Top Gun was a drama wrapped in an action movie”Kosinski continues. “So when I heard we won awards like Best Action Film and Best Stunt (At the Saturn Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards, respectively, Editor’s note), I asked myself: “Is this how I would describe Maverick?” I thought I was filming an action movie?
No. Drama was always front and center. The performance of aerial sections was to support the drama.’
For Joseph Kosinski, the dramatic aspect and the grand spectacle aspect are closely related. “For each action scene, we’re telling a story, moving the narrative forward, learning something about the character’s state of mind.”he analyzes.
