The São Paulo monorail has the highest capacity in the world, capable of carrying 48,000 passengers
Two trains of the 15-Silver line, in San Paolo (SP), collided again in the early hours of this Thursday (9). The previous morning, just before making the first journey, two trains collided head-on near Sapopemba station.
The vehicles were still without passengers and, despite being driven by autonomous operation, each train had a driver at the time of the accident. One of the men sustained minor injuries.
In an interview with the press, the authorities responsible for the operations of the monorail they said technicians were working to find out what might have caused the crash. So far, there is no conclusion.
How do monorails work?
Considered a means of transportation highly modernthe vehicle is an alternative adopted by cities to relieve traffic on land roads, since the monorail is operated by suspended tracks.
Operating in several cities around the world, the São Paulo monorail is the one with the highest capacity, capable of carrying up to 48,000 passengers.
Despite the name, the monorail is connected to two lateral rails which only serve to connect the vehicles, the name is given because the vehicle moves on a girder, as if the locomotion were on a single track.
For locomotion, pneumatic tires and an electric traction system are used. Even using tyresthe vehicle is still classified as a train.
So-called cargo tires are those that support the weight of the train and passengers, as well as haul the composition. They are new tires mounted on the wheel, placed above the guide and coupled to the electric motor.
In an interview with the Via Trolebus YouTube channel, São Paulo monorail maintenance supervisor Felipe Gomes explained that the cargo tires are supported by guide tires.
“The guide tires are on the sides of the rails to provide support, all tires are inspected and serviced in a workshop prior to train operations,” he said.
Gomes adds that the vehicles are managed by electricity through the rails.
“The rail has an electrical wire and is on each side of the guide, third and fourth rails. The electrical system of the monorail consists of aluminum and is lined with stainless steel for durability. It is through this bar that the train receives energy,” he explains.
In the event of a failure in the operation, passengers may fear being stuck at the top. But this fear can be dismissed, there are emergency walkways in case there is a need to evacuate people.
