“From the Last Days of Ptolemy Gray” by Walter Mosle..
The Last Days of Ptolemy Gray, a TV series created by Walter Mosley and Samuel L. With Jackson, Dominic Fishbeck, Damon Gupton, Walton Goggins…
In the last days of Ptolemy Gray, Dominic Fishbeck plays Robin, a young woman who has lost her parents and now has no family and no place to live. When Ptolemy (Samuel L. Jackson) loses his nephew Reggie, the last member of his family to care for him, he meets Robin. The latter stays with him after being chased away by the host woman.
Robin and Ptolemy together form a bizarre duo that we rarely encounter in fiction between a memoryless old man and a young woman whose life begins. AlloCiné spoke with Dominic Fishbeck, whose career is going at full speed.
AlloCiné: The theme of this series is quite difficult, old age, memory impairment … things that pushed you to play the role of Robin, who takes care of Ptolemy, played by the legendary Samuel L. Is Jackson performing?
Dominic Fishbeck: This TV series attracted me to this unconditional love that shines on this wonderful story of Ptolemy and Robin. It is also a story of redemption. They both need redemption so that they do not even know it. Robin realizes this need when he starts talking about his mother. It was important for me to understand what motivates him emotionally and what allows him to survive in this difficult world.
I think he has not done enough for his mother, so he is going to give everything for this man he meets. The form of guilt weighs on his heart and he has to look at this fracture. What fascinated me about this series is what family is and what our past’s mean. For me, who is young, it gives me a different look of old age. We try to understand what old age means and what it entails, as well as the memory loss suffered by Ptolemy.
Tell us about your experience with Samuel L. With Jackson. He is an icon of cinema, can you imagine we can learn a lot by answering?
აკSurprising! And you will never get bored of Samuel because he has so much energy, it’s unbelievable. Even if the theme and atmosphere of the series were quite sad, Samuel always knew how to bring a lot of light and humor between different shots during filming. He is a truly unique, honest, authentic person. I hope that with age I will become like him in these areas. I hope I can be myself, without thinking about the opinion of others.
Talk more about aging Samuel L. Given Jackson and your age difference, did he give you any advice on aging well?
Samuel does not talk much and does not like to give advice. But by the example of what he does on a daily basis and by the kindness of the soul, I can only inspire his and his approach to old age. What amazes me is the fact that he is always fishing! He and Debbie Allen, who is directing the second episode.
Both are over 70 years old and have all the energy in the world. They never stopped on the set. I, meanwhile, was still out of breath and tired. There was such an infantile complicity between them. It was really refreshing to see. I have found that if you pay attention to your body and maintain your neurons, then it is possible to age gracefully and have all your mobility and physical strength.
The series is also a study of our minds, brains and mental abilities. What is most beautiful in our minds and what do you think is the worst thing about it?
I think our minds, our brains can create all the realities we dream about. I think in life you should always express what you really want. I wanted to be an actor for 12 years, I was watching Transformers and now I am in the movie of the next Transformers, I have the main role! If you dream, if you believe, then it becomes a reality!
The worst is when our mind starts to over-analyze, overheating and thinking too long. What follows is an attack of anxiety or even depression. You may even find yourself completely paranoid and believe that everyone is chasing you. That’s why I believe in meditation, because for me it is a way to find the truth within yourself.
Finally, what is the message of this series?
The message for me is that it is important to live in the present and enjoy every second of it. Especially since everything can change for the worse or for the better from one moment to the next. I do not think anyone wants to come to the end of life to think that life has been missed or to wonder if this or that event could be changed with a little more vigilance. By staying authentic and sincere with yourself, I want to believe that a person goes to the end of life without regrets and regrets. Hope so. And I hope to finally create memories so beautifully that they will stay with me and those I love until my last breath.
