This Sunday, March 12, the 2023 Oscars ceremony takes place, when the main and most coveted awards of world cinema will be presented. This is a traditional award that has taken its place in the global event calendar for decades. But how was the Oscar born?
The Oscars, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, had their first edition in 1929, with the awards ceremony held on May 16 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles.
In this first edition, films from 1927, the year the Academy was founded, to 1928 were evaluated. The idea of creating the award came from the creation of the Academy itself, the result of the efforts of film industry leaders, mainly Louis B Mayer, president of the prestigious MGM.
The need to create a Film Academy arose from the expansion process of American cinema, especially in the 1920s, to promote and recognize excellence in cinema and defend the interests of the industry. The ceremony originally and traditionally takes place in Los Angeles, where Hollywood is located.
It was from these efforts that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science (AMPAS) was born. Founded on May 11, 1927, the Academy of the Oscars had actor Douglas Fairbanks as its first president.
With the creation of the Academy came the idea of rewarding the best films produced annually. The idea of the award that became the Oscar was established at the origin of the Academy, although the first ceremony took place only in 1929.
The first Academy Awards were attended by 270 people, with the winners already known. At the time, 15 statuettes and the war drama were delivered wings it was named best picture.
The Oscar winners were chosen by voting among the members of the Academy, which at the time had about 250 members, including actors, directors, producers, screenwriters and technicians.
Despite being referred to as the “Oscar” today, this was only adopted in 1939 and the origin of the award’s nickname is somewhat disputed, with several possible origins. The award statuette, which has the official name of “Academy Award of Merit”, depicts a knight wielding a sword on a roll of film. It was conceived by MGM’s Cedric Gibbons in 1927 and sculpted by artist George Stanley.
The 2023 Oscars, which will be the 95th annual awards show, will take place this Sunday, March 12, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Check out the list of this year’s nominees and where to watch the awards.
