Cruz-Maltino overtook Flamengo and finished the Guanabara Cup in 2nd place
Vasco is still full in the 2023 season. This Thursday, in São Januário, coach Maurício Barbieri’s team beat Bangu 2-0, with goals from Gabriel Pec and Pedro Raul, and secured 2nd place in the Guanabara Cup The result gives him the advantage of two equal results in the duel with Flamengo, for the semifinals of the Carioca Championship.
This was Cruz-Maltino’s fifth consecutive victory this year, something that hadn’t happened since August 2020. At the time, under the leadership of Ramon Menezes – now interim coach of the Brazil national team -, the team also won five times in a row: 3-1 over Macaé, 1-0 over Madureira, 2-0 over Sport, 2-1 over São Paulo and 3-0 over Ceará. The sequence ended with a 0-0 draw against Grêmio.
The current series, while having no Serie A fixtures in the Brazilian league, has already had two classics along the way: 2-0 against Botafogo and 1-0 against Flamengo. In addition to victories over rivals and Bangu, the team beat Trem, for the Copa do Brasil, 4-0, and Boavista, in the State, 4-1.
Last year, Vasco’s greatest streak came in Série B and had the help of two coaches. After the departure of Zé Ricardo, Emilio Faro took over on an interim basis and secured triumphs over Náutico (3 – 2) and Cruzeiro (1 – 0). Maurício Souza arrived at the club and kept the series going for two more games: 1-0 against Londrina and 3-0 against Operário.
Vasco’s next opponent will still be Flamengo. The teams face off next Monday, at 21:10, at the Maracanã, in the first duel of the carioca semifinals.
