Scott Derrickson, who was announced as director of the dark sequel ‘Into the Labyrinth 2’, tells us about the liminal state of production.
We weren’t going to get rid of going back to ‘Inside of the labyrinth‘ (Jim Henson, 1986). More than three decades after that extraordinary fantasy of the Henson factory, with a long-awaited script terry jones and with Jennifer Connelly Y David Bowie as irreplaceable protagonists, at Sony they have been calculating the best possible move to return to their universe for some time.
For more than a year, the Uruguayan Faith Alvarez (‘Infernal Possession (Evil Dead)’, ‘Don’t breathe’) was the director assigned to the project but, just a month after learning of his departure from the title, the new signing in the direction work was confirmed: Scott Derrickson.
With ‘Hellraiser V: Inferno‘ (2000), ‘Emily Rose’s exorcism‘ (2005) and ‘Sinister‘ (2012) in Derrickson’s filmography, he came to the forefront of the industry by becoming part of the marvelite family with ‘Doctor Strange‘ (2016) to later, due to creative differences with the brand, leave ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘leaving it in the hands of his friend sam raimi.
Despite Álvarez’s departure, the script prepared by Maggie Levin for this sequel it seemed to be maintained and, as promised, the title could delve into the darker side of the original but, after asking the director, it may take time to have new news.
“I don’t have much to say about it. I’ve been involved in part of its development but, to be honest, I don’t know exactly what phase the project is at in the studio,” Derrickson confesses to us, in full promo of the expected ‘black phone‘. “What I can say is that I had a really good experience working on it alongside Lisa Henson, Jim Henson’s daughter, who is trying to get it to come off. But I’m not sure how the movie is doing right now.” “.
And we must remember that when Jim Henson swept away with his ‘Sesame Street‘ (1969), decided to continue creating magic looking for a more mature audience. So came the fleeting ‘The Muppet Show: Sex and Violence‘ (1975), reconverted shortly after the fundamental, ‘The Muppet Show‘ (1976), and family bets willing to treat children like adults as ‘Dark glass‘ (Jim Henson, Frank Oz, 1982) or her own ‘Inside of the labyrinth‘ (Jim Henson, 1986).
