Disney+ has added this Friday, March 10, to its Unarrested catalog, a Hulu series available in France under the STAR banner. This comedy is in 8 episodes of 30 minutes, so it is intended for a fairly mature audience. Fans of the Scandal series – also available on the platform – will be delighted to find Kerry Washington on their screen.
In recent years, the actress has become accustomed to serious roles on the side of Little Dawn. She recently lent her features to a single, bohemian mother who settled with her daughter in an affluent suburb in Little Fires Everywhere. Olivia Pope’s ex-interpreter is back in action as an estranged mother in Unprisoned, but don’t expect any drama at all.
The new Disney+ series is closer to a dramedy with its 30-minute format, with occasional lighthearted lines and sitcoms. We’ve never seen Washington headline a program like this. If she sometimes borders on overacting, it’s clear that the young woman really enjoyed playing in the series.
Unprisoned is inspired by the true story of its creator, Tracy McMillan, who relived all of her trauma to write the lines. The series gives us some funny and awkward moments that she has to live through (not always helpful for the action, such as Brenda Strong’s full-frontal scene), such as when the heroine meets her father (Delroy Lindo) and her former stepmother, who are having fun. It also talks about identity, recognition and forgiveness. Kerry Washington, who plays a psychiatrist/influencer who specializes in family issues, gives her subscribers a little therapy lesson in each episode.
On the other side of the Atlantic, critics are hailing Tracy McMillan’s writing, which portrays this father-son relationship with tenderness, honesty and a big heart, all the while against the backdrop of the black situation in the US. How can an ex-con get back on his feet when society prevents him from doing so? This is the theme of the series.
