The deputy was sworn in as leader of the Democratic Party
MEP Elly Schlein, 37, was proclaimed this Sunday (12) as the new secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), the largest center-left party in Italy and the main opposition force to Giorgia Meloni’s government.
Representative of the more progressive wings of the Democratic Party, Schlein won the primaries on February 26 against the governor of Emilia-Romagna, Stefano Bonaccini, with a score of 53.8% against 46.2%, but his mandate has officially begun only this sunday.
“Those who bet on the end of the Democratic Party have lost their bet. We are here, stronger and more united, and we are coming. This will be a new spring for us,” Schlein said in his speech to the party assembly in Rome.
“We want to be on the side of Italy that suffers the most”, added the new secretary, who promised to dialogue with the other opposition forces to find points in common.
“Many wanted our failure, but we are more determined than before to be a humble party to listen to the communities, especially in the face of the wrong answers from the Meloni government, the most right-wing in republican history. We are something else,” he said.
According to Schlein, the Democratic Party will be an “ecological, feminist and inclusive” left to show an alternative to the Meloni administration. As secretary of the Democratic Party you have also pledged to defend the laws for the recognition of citizenship for the children of immigrants born in Italy and against homophobia.
Defeated candidate in the primaries, Bonaccini was elected president of the Democratic Party, on the proposal of Schlein himself, even if the position has a more symbolic character.
The deputy is the youngest person and the first woman to lead the party, which has had three prime ministers in the last 10 years (Enrico Letta, Matteo Renzi and Paolo Gentiloni), as well as having supported the governments of Giuseppe Conte and Mario Draghi.
Schlein has Italian, Swiss and American nationality and participated as a volunteer in Barack Obama’s campaigns in 2008 and 2012. She was a MEP from 2014 to 2019 and deputy to Bonaccini in the government of Emilia-Romagna between February 2020 and October 2022. when he assumed the position of deputy.
Schlein replaces Enrico Letta in command of the Democratic Party and has the challenge of reinventing the party after the categorical victory of the right in the parliamentary elections last September, which brought Meloni to power. .
