Worker in a slave-like situation is rescued with an electronic anklet in RS

The case joins other similar ones in the region; last month, the number reached 207.

A 59-year-old man was rescued from a slave situation on a farm São José do Herval, in the north of Rio Grande do Sul. The case adds to other rescues of similarly plighted workers in the region. Last month, the number reached 207.

According to the Ministry of Labor (MTE), the worker found at the scene is illiterate and worked as a janitor. He was wearing an electronic anklet, due to a sentence he was serving for a crime he committed. This way, any attempt to leave would be reported to the police.

The G1 reported that, according to the inspectors, the man was sleeping next to a pigsty. The worker’s salary was set at R $ 400. However, the employer charged R $ 500 for accommodation, which means that, in practice, the employee paid R $ 100 per month to work.

The sentence condition entailed the obligation for the worker to work in those conditions, since all communications with the prison authority were carried out by the employer, who did not provide the victim with any documents regarding her situation.“says the labor inspector Joel Darcy.

The man was sent to his partner’s home, where he will continue to serve his sentence at home.

Other cases

The Aurora, Garibaldi and Salton wineries will pay R$ 7 million in workers’ compensation. They are involved in cases of labor analogous to slavery. About 200 workers, rescued in February, in the town of Bento Gonçalves, in the Serra do Rio Grande do Sul, will receive the amount.

The g1 explained that according to the statements, employees found in conditions similar to slavery were outsourced and held in precarious accommodation, under threat and violence. The amount of compensation was defined in a Conduct Adjustment Term (TAC) issued by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT), the body investigating the case.

The MPT has ruled that compensation will be paid for individual and collective non-pecuniary damages, according to g1. The term for payment of individual damages is 15 days, starting from the day of presentation of the list of rescued persons. While the amounts of the collective moral damage will fall on entities, funds or projects aimed at repairing the damage.

In addition to the compensation amount, in the TAC, the three companies assumed 21 obligations, which, among these, include monitoring the working conditions of the people hired in outsourcing. If some of the wineries commit irregularities, the clause provides for a fine of up to R$ 300,000.
