São Paulo Futebol Clube left-back Dani Silva recalls cryptocurrency scam and financial pyramid and warns

While participating in Terrabolistas this Monday (13), the player Dani Silva, left wing of the São Paulo FC team, revealed that he suffered a financial blow in 2018, in Bitcoin transactions, when he was still playing for Santos FC.

At the end of the week, the case of the former Palmeiras athletes came to light. Two players have invested more than R $ 10 million in Xland Holding’s cryptocurrency scheme. Gustavo Scarpa invested BRL 6.3 million, while Mayke invested nearly BRL 4.1 million in the business. The two were led to believe they would return 3.5% to 5% per month, well above market standards.

The investment was indicated by WLJC Consultoria e Gestão Empresarial, of which Willian is a partner. In an official position, the company said it was also a victim of Xland Holding and that the attacker lost 17.5 million reais in the settlement with the company.

The financial losses for female athletes who make investments and end up losing part of their assets have also affected women’s football. “I have already fallen for a scam (…) there are many people close to you who advise you. He’s your best friend, he’s your family member… you end up repeating the cycle and falling into a coup again,” said player Dani Silva, left-back of São Paulo Futebol Clube.

“They sponsored the men’s beach soccer team at the time, and then I got excited about that, investing in bitcoin. I had access to the president of the club, I said I was a footballer, I commented on the situation, I explained about Santos [time que a atleta jogava na época]. Then he commented that he also wanted to sponsor the Santos women’s team,” revealed the athlete.

Dani said she was encouraged by the supposed financial return offered in the cryptocurrency application and invested more and more. By the time she realized this, she had already lost a significant amount of money and that businessman disappeared and stopped answering calls.

With more time to plan and study, it was during the pandemic that the SPFC athlete became interested in learning more about economics, took classes, and set an example to friends and family. “Today, I’m able to self-manage, have a more diversified portfolio, pay Social Security, and have my emergency reserve,” says Dani.

The athlete defends the implementation of a public policy on financial education. “I believe that not only in clubs but financial education should be a school subject. He entered elementary school, where we’re understanding each other a little more about things, he should have already learned about finance. But the system is made so that people don’t understand and stay in a bubble. Now, within clubs, it is essential to have a professional. Just as there is a psychologist, there should be a professional in the financial area to be able to educate the players”, says Dani.
