65 – The Land Before is written and directed by Scott Beck and Brian Woods, who wrote the profitable A Quiet Place. In terms of staging, we owe them the horror film Haunt. They explain: “We love genre movies. Horror, suspense, action, adventure – that’s a magic combination for us. And what we love even more is mixing a genre movie with a heavy dose of suspense and characters you really connect with.”
The blockbuster is also produced by Sam Raimi, a big name in the horror genre since his debut with Evil Dead (1981). The latter entrusts: “What fascinated me the most was that the father-son relationship between Mills and Koa is at the center of the film. Koa is brave and smart and he goes against Mills. Together they try to survive. And even if Mills saves him. Koa first saves Koa in the end. Like in a fairy tale.” .

Realistic dinosaurs
To design the dinosaurs, the production brought in Neville Page, who worked on Avatar, Star Trek and Tron. Visual effects supervisor Chris Harvey says: “We wanted to shape the realistic dinosaurs in a way that brought out the horror in the scenes. We gave each of these creatures very tangible real elements, a kind of background. The Big Bad, for example, is very faded: it’s more faded, scarred by past battles.”

Shooting in the forest
65 – The Land Before was filmed in the vast forests of Oregon, including Golden Falls. A great place to create epic scenes. Director of Photography Salvatore Totino (Everest, Bird Box, etc.), who is used to lighting these kinds of natural locations, recalls:
“It was a challenge: some of the shots were really difficult and we were in places where it wasn’t easy to work, in the middle of the trees or in the swamps. One of the challenges was knowing how to learn. I was going to light this vast area at night so that make it scary and mysterious”. Filming lasted 40 days.
