Expired makeup? Experts explain the risks

Expired makeup isn’t a problem just because it loses its function. Dermatologists and ophthalmologists warn about the risks

Many people believe that the only problem with expired makeup is that it fails to perform its function. That is, the mascara becomes drier and does not define the lashes well, the lipstick crumbles in the mouth, the foundation cracks when applied. However, this is not the only danger.

This is because, over time, cosmetic preservatives lose their effect. Thus, outside the original composition, makeup can become an ideal place for the development of fungi and bacteria, which cause irritation and allergies.

Also, the risk is higher for the eye region. It is not uncommon for problems such as conjunctivitis, itching, allergies and mucous membrane infections to arise. The skin is also at a loss, as cosmetics that are out of date or in poor condition clog pores, causing acne, folliculitis and peeling skin, warns dermatologist member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), Lucas Miranda.

SBD has the following table with validity standards:

  • water bases: 12 months;
  • Oil bases: 18 months;
  • Lipstick: 48 months;
  • Correctors: 18 months;
  • Eyeliner: 6 to 12 months;
  • Gloss: 6 to 12 months;
  • Mascara (mascara): 6 months;
  • Face powder (compact and loose), blush and highlighter: from 18 to 24 months;
  • Compact shade: 36 months.

Shelf life of makeup

Lucas explains that virtually all manufactured products contain preservatives. This is because they need to guarantee “shelf life”, i.e. they need their components to remain stable and functional in the face of climatic variations and the passage of time so that they are safe for consumption.

The first step in identifying expired makeup is through the date printed on the packaging of each product. “If the use of the product is punctual and you only use it on special occasions, do not buy cosmetics that have little time to expire,” recommends the professional.

However, Lucas points out that the indication on the back of the package can wear off over time, making it difficult to ascertain whether or not the cosmetic has expired. Many have an open product symbol with a number and letter. For example: 6M means 6 months of validity, 24M means 24 months and so on.

“As a last resort, if nothing on the packaging indicates the period of use, it is important to observe any changes in the product, such as odor, color, texture and fixing ability. Another warning sign are green, gray or white dots, they are signs that the product was contaminated”, emphasizes the dermatologist.

Lucas says knowing your expiration date is important, but there are also individual factors that need to be taken into consideration. “Some people tend to develop allergic reactions more easily. In these cases it is interesting to favor products with a lower allergenic potential (hypoallergenic), just as it is also interesting to favor non-comedogenic products, which do not clog pores, to avoid the appearance of blackheads or pimples,” he explains.

What to do in case of irritation?

Just because you’re wearing out-of-date makeup doesn’t necessarily mean you have a problem. However, it’s important to prevent them from appearing, Lucas points out. “So, watch for any allergic reaction after using the product, and this also applies to products that are within their expiration date. remove the product immediately from the skin and cleanse the region properly,” guides the specialist.

The professional adds that you shouldn’t apply any type of ointment or dermatological product when you feel something is wrong. “The protocol is: wash your face well; apply cold serum compresses to relieve the burning and, if symptoms persist, seek medical attention as soon as possible,” he specifies.

Is there a correct way to apply makeup?

Contrary to popular belief, the dermatologist clarifies that it’s okay to apply makeup to the skin with your hands, as long as your hands are properly sanitized. “The problem is the direct contact of hands and nails with the product inside the package, this contact can lead to contamination of the product. So, if you choose to do your make-up with your hands, remember to remove portions of the product with a clean spatula, applicator sponge or brush,” Lucas directs.

Following this protocol, applying makeup with a brush or other similar material is more convenient. The expert points out that it is very important that this applicator (be it a brush, a spatula or a sponge) is always well sanitized.

“It is important to always clean the applicators after each use. Hygiene can be done with plenty of running water and neutral liquid soap, always leaving it to dry in a fresh, airy environment,” he explains. He also points out that, in case of visible changes in the material, such as spots, blackheads or odor, the recommendation is to discard the cosmetic and replace it.

How to make makeup products last longer?

To prevent cosmetics from expiring, the ideal is to avoid excessive purchases. “Unless you’re a makeup artist and work with varieties to meet demand. Otherwise, keep an easy-to-use stock by the expiration date listed on the package,” says Lucas.

It is also necessary to store the product in places that are in good condition. That is, protecting it from light, humidity and heat, preferably inside a very dry suitcase or box, in a cooler place where the sun does not shine. “Finally, keep the packaging on which the expiration date is recorded, so that you have access to this information whenever you need it,” advises the professional.

The risk to the eyes

Dr. Kemi Salami, ophthalmologist at the Clínica a Beleza do Olhar, explains that eye problems are naturally more frequent in women, due to the following factors:

  • Hormonal changes such as during menopause;
  • Longer life expectancy (the longer we live, the greater the chance of developing aging-related eye diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration);
  • Sociocultural issues that make access to health services impossible.

Furthermore, makeup can also be responsible for harming eye health. Mainly if it’s an inappropriate makeup for the eye contour, and rich in heavy metals. Such a composition can cause allergies, even more so if it is not completely removed and if it has expired.

“Women should take care of their health in general, have regular consultations with the doctor, gynecologist who will help to make an early diagnosis of various diseases and also regular consultations with the ophthalmologist, especially after 40 and after menopause, because there is a greater risk of developing ophthalmological diseases”, underlines the professional.
