In the weeks since James Gunn unveiled his DC Universe slate, some details continue to be ironed out. For one thing, last night Gunn confirmed, after much speculation, that he’s actually going to lead the Superman: Legacy script he’s been writing for some time, designed to bring an entirely new version of Kal-El to the screen. Another cause for speculation was whether Ben Affleck could end up in the director’s chair for any future DC projects, years after he was potentially set to direct a Batman film. But now he is definitely out.
In a new interview with the Hollywood reporter, Affleck made it clear these are not stories he wants to tell right now. “I would not direct anything for the [James] Gunn DC. No way,” he says. “I have nothing against James Gunn. Good boy, I’m sure he’ll do a good job.
This stems from comments, in the same interview, about his experience playing Bruce Wayne in the Snyderverse era of the DCEU. “I was going to do a Batman, and [Justice League] It made me say, ‘I walked out. I never want to do that again. I’m not suitable,” she says. “It was the worst experience I’ve ever seen in a company full of crap experiences. She broke my heart. There was someone’s idea [Joss Whedon] come in, like, ‘I’m going to bail you out and we’re going to do 60 days of shooting and I’m going to write everything about what you have. I have the secret. And that wasn’t the secret. It was difficult. And I started drinking too much. I was back at the hotel in London, or jumped out the window. The experience has given him a new perspective on his priorities. “I said to myself, ‘I don’t want to get involved in any way with this. And I don’t want to waste my life anymore, of which I have only a limited part,” he says.
Instead, Affleck’s next film as a director is Air – the story behind Nike’s release of its Air Jordan shoe, which hits theaters in April, followed by a release on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service. It remains to be seen which directors will take on Gunn’s other announced projects for DC, from Authorityto the batman movie The brave and the braveFor Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow. And James Mangold will indeed sign for the swamp thing movie? Stay tuned…
