An announcement dropped like a chopper this week: Willow , the small-screen sequel to the iconic ’80s fantasy film, will not be getting a second season. But according to showrunner Jonathan Kasdan, a season 2 would still be possible. .
Kasdan addressed the issue of Willow’s future in a lengthy statement shared on Twitter. In it, he challenges the idea that Lucasfilm has ended the series, insisting that “The people at Lucasfilm didn’t describe things that way either“. He goes on to explain that Willow’s main cast members were released from their contracts to pursue other opportunities after it was revealed that the series’ second season would not begin filming for the next 12 months.

Kasdan adds that there are scripts for Season 2, stating that he is “Absolutely not“The question is that these episodes were never filmed. To illustrate his point, he cites several other series, such as Atlanta and Larry and His Navel, which were renewed after long hiatuses.
The news that Lucasfilm would not be renewing Willow for a second season didn’t come with any excuses. However, industry experts have pointed to Disney+’s cost-cutting measures as a likely reason for the decision.
Is a second season possible?
Whether Willow would get a second season has been the subject of intense speculation since its eight-episode first season aired. Jonathan Kasdan’s comments on the subject in late 2022 have already raised alarm. A second season was already in jeopardy as he hinted that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was reluctant to give it the green light.
“I’m rooting for Kathy because working with this cast and crew on this show was the best experience ever.“- he said comics. “We still feel there are many more important stories and places to visit.“
However, many Willow fans were optimistic, excited by positive statements from Kasdan and the show’s other main creators. That includes executive producer Ron Howard, who recently expressed interest in directing one or more episodes of Willow’s second season. Howard directed the original film, but scheduling conflicts kept him behind the camera for the Disney+ series.
All eight episodes of Willow are currently streaming on Disney+.
