Are you going to sell or buy a new or used one? See engine recommendations

If you plan to buy or sell a near-new or used car, it’s a good idea to check the DMV SP suggestions before closing a deal.

With the increase in the prices of zero km vehicles, the search for used vehicles has grown as an option to get a good deal. With this in mind, Detran.SP offers several tips for anyone looking to safely sell or buy a used vehicle.

The first is to consult any debts, blocks and restrictions on the vehicle that will be purchased. You can search on the local authority website (www.detran.sp.gov.br).

As far as those intending to sell a vehicle are concerned, the Internet has now become the main choice, as negotiating privately can lead to some savings, above all in relation to the negotiations carried out with agencies and dealerships, where the values offered by the shops for the purchase of used vehicles, are generally well below the Fipe table, the main reference in the market for this type of car.

But you need to be aware and be careful with digital media. The seller does not have to provide, for example, the chassis number, as, in addition to not being an indispensable data to conclude the negotiation, it can still be used on cloned vehicles, usually the result of robbery and/or theft. Only the information from the license plate and from Renavam is enough.

Booming used market

Data from Fenabrave (National Federation of Automotive Vehicle Distribution) show that the sale of semi-new vehicles represents 83% of vehicle sales in the State of São Paulo. Between January and December 2022, 4.1 million used vehicle transactions were recorded, compared to 849,530 new registrations.

According to the agency, 2,049,491 used car transactions were carried out in January and February 2023, a result 3.9% higher than that recorded in the first two months of last year.

The segment that stood out was that of cars and light commercial vehicles, which totaled 1,511,227 units sold, an improvement of 5.3% compared to the same two months of 2022, when transactions had been 1,435,381.

Tips from Detran.SP

1. Be wary of “unmissable offers” and “very low prices”. Scams are applied, mainly on the Internet, by attracting buyers with prices well below market. Consult the Fipe table to verify the updated values.

two. In an online private sale, always schedule a prior inspection of the vehicle in a public place with the buyer and be careful when paying to avoid any kind of scam. Never finalize the purchase by analyzing only photos on the internet, nor pay any amount without first seeing the vehicle in person.

3. Before concluding the deal, it is also advisable to take the car to a trusted mechanic to check, among other things, the functioning of the engine, suspension and lighting system.

4. Before concluding a purchase, the buyer must take the car to a vehicle identification control company accredited by Detran.SP for the issuance of the vehicle report. To check all companies, access the page www.detran.sp.gov.br/wps/portal/portaldetran/parceiros/pesquisaecvs.

5. When transferring the vehicle, pay attention to the main required documents, which are: original and up-to-date copy of the CNH, up-to-date proof of residence (e.g. water or electricity bill) and vehicle documents (CRV or ATPV-e ). All vehicle debts, if any, must be settled and the transfer fee paid to perform the service. The deadline for ordering the transfer of ownership is 30 days.

6. Owners of vehicles with ATPV (Vehicle Ownership Transfer Authorization) in paper format (green currency) must never give the blank document to the buyer. Fill out the form, sign it and have the signature authenticated, in “authenticity” mode, together with the new owner, at the notary’s office.

For those who have the ATPV in digital format, the signature and notarization of both the buyer and the seller of the vehicle at the notary’s office is also required. Without authenticated signature authentication, there will be no embedding of sales communication and process acknowledgment.

7. Important: whenever there is an authenticated signature, the seller is recommended to keep a certified copy of the vehicle document, handing the original over to the new vehicle owner.

8. Within five days of going to the notary, the seller of the vehicle will be able to check on the Detran.SP website whether the communication of sale was included in the vehicle registration plate. Otherwise, the seller must notify Detran.SP of the conclusion of the negotiation, presenting an authenticated copy of the CRV or ATPV-e.

9. The signing of the ATPV-e (Authorization for the Transfer of Vehicle Ownership to digital media), when the seller and buyer are natural persons, can be completed directly by the application of the Digital Traffic Card (CDT) of the Federal Government, being waived , in this case, the need to go to a notary to carry out a notary.

10. If the buyer of the vehicle cannot appear at a Poupatempo or Detran.SP unit to request the transfer, a close relative (mother, father or brother) can represent him, provided he presents the original and a simple copy of a document proving the relationship, as well as a copy of the vehicle owner’s document.
