Italy has a law against limiting the rights of same-sex parents

Thousands of people took to the streets in Milan this Saturday (18) to protest against the measures of the government of the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, to limit the rights of homosexual parents.

Entitled “Hands off our sons and daughters”, the demonstration takes place in Piazza della Scala, in front of the Milan town hall, and was convened by LGBTQIA+ associations.

The northern Italian city was registering children born overseas to same-sex parents who had been produced by medically assisted reproduction. However, it had to stop the practice this week after, according to the town hall, the Interior Ministry of the Meloni government sent a letter insisting that this type of decision be taken by the courts.

In this way, registration is now only allowed when a “traditional adoption” takes place.

During the protest, the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, unexpectedly showed up in the square, initially saying he would not participate in the act. “I’m always with you, I’ve been from the first moment,” he said.

The mobilization also counts on the presence of Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, the largest left-wing party in the country, as well as the leader of the Democratic Party in the Senate, Simona Malpezzi, and the culture secretary of Milan, Tommaso Sacchi.

“It’s a beautiful square that shouts and asks for rights. Milan has done its part,” said Sacchi, referring to the 10,000 demonstrators who took to the streets.

At the meeting in Piazza della Scala, all the participants were invited to bring ballpoint pens to be held up in the air during a flashmob to ask for rights for everyone, especially for the children of same-sex couples.

The pens “represent the signatures that can no longer be made”, explained the founder of “I Sentinelli” Luca Paladini, underlining that everyone has “a huge problem represented by this government”.

This week, an Italian Senate committee voted against a European Union plan to force member states to recognize gay parental rights granted in other countries in the bloc, and it has once again sparked controversy. .
