Trump says he will be arrested and calls for protests

In a post on Truth Social, the former US president said “leaks” indicate he will be arrested on Tuesday. The Republican would be investigated for paying a bribe to a porn actress before the 2016 election. Former US President Donald Trump announced this Saturday (03/18) on his social network, Truth Social, that he expects to be arrested next Tuesday Monday and called for protests by his supporters. The Republican is reportedly under investigation over a bribery charge paid to a porn actress ahead of the 2016 election.

Trump, who is aiming to run for the White House again in 2024, said news of the impending arrest had “leaked” from New York State Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, which he called “corrupt and highly politicized”.

“The Republican favorite and former US president will be arrested on Tuesday next week. Protest, take back our nation!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The case involves a secret $130,000 payment made by Trump’s then-private attorney Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had sex with Trump years before the election, which Trump denies. The payment was apparently intended to prevent Clifford from going public with the story, which could have hurt Trump during the campaign.

Prosecutors are said to be considering pressing charges against the former president in this case. If so, the 76-year-old tycoon would become the first former US president to be charged with a crime.

On Friday, Trump’s attorney told CNBC that his client would turn himself in to face criminal charges if indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. In the United States, a jury decides whether to indict a case after the prosecutor presents evidence. According to the American press, this could happen to Trump in the coming days.

So far, however, there has been no public announcement of a deadline for completing the grand jury’s work, including any potential vote on whether to indict Trump for the crime.

Before announcing what he believes is his impending arrest, Trump said he will hold his campaign’s first rally in Texas on March 25.

Attack on the Capitol

On January 6, 2021, a horde of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from holding a joint session to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

Thousands of Trump supporters gathered in Washington, the capital of the United States, on January 5 and 6, 2021 to defend a lie spread by the Republican politician: that the 2020 presidential election was stolen by Democrats.

Trump was in Washington on Jan. 6 and attended a rally where he repeated lies about election theft and urged his supporters to “fight” to “defend the country.” After the speech, thousands of them went to the Capitol, which houses Congress, and invaded and destroyed it, attacked police and journalists, and chased members of Congress with the intention of lynching them.

After the incident, Trump praised the attack on social media and was banned from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Last year he founded his own social network, Truth Social.

Two years after the Capitol attack, in January 2023, tech giant Meta announced it would reinstate Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. In November last year, Trump’s Twitter account was reinstated on the orders of the company’s new owner, tycoon Elon Musk. On March 17, 2023, Trump’s YouTube channel was also back up and running.
