The minister asks Rome, Milan and Naples to strengthen security

On Saturday (18th), Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi asked the cities of Rome, Naples and Milan to step up security measures in areas adjacent to their train stations.

The press release sent to the mayors of the three municipalities underlines that it is necessary to guarantee “a strengthened and visible presence of the forces of order” and offer “a more effective response to the need for protection in areas where the perception of insecurity is widespread” .

“Based on the indications provided by the owner of the Viminale, the mayors, integrating the coordinated plans for the control of the territory by the police, will have to activate specific surveillance devices in these areas with the aim of making them more permanently safe and, thus returning them to full usability by the reference communities”, adds the note.

Piantedosi also recommends “a greater involvement of the Local Police and, at the same time, an increase in the commitment of the Guardia di Finanza in terms of economic-financial assessment action towards the managers of the activity”.

The request was made on the basis of the results of the “high impact” joint operations carried out since 10 January in the three main railway stations of Rome, Milan and Naples and subsequently extended to other areas of the city, more affected by drug trafficking.

“These are extraordinary territorial control services that have made use of the personnel of the State Police, the Carabineros and the Guardia di Finanza, with the collaboration of the Local Police and the help of other entities, and have allowed a increase in the prevention and repression of the various forms of illegality”, explains the statement.

The Italian government also reveals that 93,459 people were inspected during the initiative, including 26,763 foreigners, with 248 arrests and 1,243 complaints.

In all, 419 irregular workers and 266 expelled foreigners were identified, 55 of whom were accompanied to detention centers for repatriation. In addition, cash, counterfeit or unsafe products (including food, clothing, toys and more), drugs, vehicles and weapons were seized. .
