Why Conservatives Ignored 6pm interracial gay kissing on Globo

The dinnertime scene of the traditional Brazilian family has a special symbolism

Have the right and the reactionaries normalized gay kissing and failed to warn the rest of the world?

Strange the silence of the conservative court with the homoaffective sequence shown in the penultimate chapter of the 18 o’clock telenovela on Globo, ‘Mar do Sertão’.

Eudoro (Érico Brás) and Casimiro (Lukete) starred in a romantic sequence with a marriage proposal printed on the front page of the newspaper.

To seal the engagement, the two exchanged a kiss on the lips. Actually, a kiss. Discreet, but precious for representativeness.

The progressive side of social networks celebrated Globo’s audacity in showing the love between two men – one black and one white, a situation even more provocative – in the range of more polite soap operas.

The lack of clamorous protests from the ‘defenders of good morals’ can be explained by the timid repercussion of ‘Mar do Sertão’ itself on the media and on the web. It wasn’t an exciting production, even if it was well done.

The actors involved in the LGBT+ novel are not well known, which also contributes to the lack of angry reactions from those who accuse Globo’s teledrama of a bad influence for ultimately promoting sexual and gender diversity.

Because it did not generate expectations, the sequence between Eudorus and Casimir went unnoticed. It wasn’t the first gay kiss on the net at 6pm.

The taboo ended in September 2018, when Luccino (Juliano Laham) and Otávio (Henrique Muller) surrendered to feeling for each other in “The Pride and the Passion”.

However, the controversies didn’t end there. In 2022, Globo’s management cut – not to mention censored – a kiss scene between Leopoldo (Michel Blois) and Plínio (Nikolas Antunes) in ‘Além da Ilusion’.

Frustrated, the public reacted with criticism on the internet. Pressured in the middle of LGBTQIAP+ Pride month, the broadcaster inserted a character kiss into the final minute of the soap opera, under the end credits. The stain got worse…

The first kiss on the mouth between men in a Globo serial took place in the last chapter of ‘Amor à Vida’, in 2014, between Félix (Mateus Solano) and Niko (Thiago Fragoso).

Nine years earlier, the Marinho family channel angered Brazil by suspending Júnior’s (Bruno Gagliasso) kiss on Zeca (Erom Cordeiro) in ‘América’ just before it aired. Author Gloria Perez also protested.
