Did you know that Ioda, the famous Jedi master of the Star Wars saga, was partly inspired by one of the most famous men of the 20th century?
In 1980, the general public was surprised to find Jedi Master Yoda in the movie Star Wars: Episode V: Empire Reverses, which airs this Monday evening on TMC. A 75-centimeter strange creature that turned into an instant cult whose genesis was somewhat loaded.
After the first draft, which was far from the final result of Joe Johnston, Jumanji and Han’s future director, I cut the kids down, making Yodas’s character look like a frog. A real monkey wearing a costume and a mask could also be used to bring the Jedi Master to life on screen. The ideas were quickly abandoned by George Lucas.
After thinking about a meeting with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, the father of the intergalactic saga, he has a revelation for his Yoda: What if he were a doll? After four months of work, the creature’s appearance is being fixed under the supervision of chief makeup artist Stuart Friborn, known for creating the 2001 Monkeys: Space Odyssey.
After several attempts, Stuart Friborn decides to inspire Yoda’s appearance with his face, but also one of the most famous scientists in history! One or two physical features of Albert Einstein, whose portrait adorned one of the walls of the make-up studio, were indeed added, namely to the eyes, to give him a genius spark, as well as an upper lip.
“George showed me some original sketches and I thought it was interesting, but I want a little more depth.– says Stuart Freeburn in the documentary Empire of DreamsDedicated to the original trilogy. “I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘Maybe something funny is going on in my face.’
“I have to be smart now. I took a picture of Einstein and added wrinkles”– adds the legendary makeup artist. “I thought a lot because he had to have all kinds of subtle movements, especially in the face and body. I put in everything, everything that was needed, and finished the work.”
