Suicide Squad: This exciting scene was cut by the studio

This is what David Ayer says, and he says it again: the suicide squad we see today is not his. This is evidenced by his recent take to Twitter to share details of the scene with fans and the drastic choice of Warner Studios without his approval.

At first, Ayer proposed a very dark and very serious DC film, and slowly during the filming the studio tried to bend this trend. Marvel just released Guardians of the Galaxy, a huge success that featured a fun anti-hero team-up and a pretty colorful movie. Since then, the suicide squad imagined by Ayer has lived on.

Deadshot, Killer Croc, Harley Quinn and El Diablo

The art direction of the film was completely changed by Warner to approach a lighter atmosphere and the script was also changed against his wishes. One Suicide Squad character in particular was affected by these changes: El Diablo, as Ayer himself revealed:

“I was asking for an offer for Diablo, which he lit up with his powers. The studio cut him. And killed him. Diablo talks exactly like everyone I grew up with in South Central.”

The reaction of El Diablo himself

Real name Chato Santana in the film, El Diablo is a Mexican gangster gifted with pyrokinesis who is brought to justice after accidentally burning his wife and children. His screenwriter Jay Hernandez (The New Magnum) recalls the deleted scene mentioned by the director:

“I loved that scene, I was pissed when I heard the studio wanted to ‘kill’ Diablo (besides, you have to dare with fire). I thought, ‘Obviously, they’re killing a Mexican.’

In the film, Diablo sacrifices himself by frontally attacking the Incubus, the Sorcerer’s brother. As he gives in to his blows, he orders his comrades to blast the villain and him. An idea that was not originally planned.

The Suicide Squad movie was instead a box office success, earning $746 million at the box office against a $175 million budget. However, it was a bit stingy with profits for Warner, who won’t release a sequel until 2021, The Suicide Squad, ironically directed by Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn.

For years, fans have been clamoring for an “Ayer Cut,” Suicide Squad as originally envisioned by its writer and director. As it stands, only Warner Studios owns the pictures, and it always refuses to hand them over.
