Legacy: The powerful and wealthy family that inspired the Royces? This is it!

The award-winning Succession series comes to an end with its fourth and final season, and fans will have to say goodbye to the wealthy and powerful Roy family. Who will succeed aging media mogul patriarch Logan (Brian Cox), who is desperately looking for a replacement among his children Connor (Alan Ruck), Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) at the helm of his business?

The long-awaited answer will be revealed at the end of Season 4, which will be available via Warner Pass on the Prime Video platform in France from March 27. Before you discover the results of the Jesse Armstrong series, take a look at the origins and inspiration of the legacy.

Which family inspired Legacy?

The Roy family is very loosely inspired by the powerful Australian family, the Murdoch family. And while it’s not really a biopic masquerading as social satire, there are many similarities between Royce and the Murdochs.

Starting with Australian-American patriarch Rupert Murdoch, businessman, media mogul and billionaire. He is the majority shareholder of News Corporation, one of the world’s largest media groups. In 2015, according to Forbes magazine, he was the 32nd most powerful person in the world and the 76th richest person in the world. It has been quoted in several works of pop culture, such as The Simpsons, The Big Bang Theory, and The Devil Wears Prada.

Like Rupert Murdoch, patriarch Logan Roy is an immigrant, in his case from Scotland, and from more humble beginnings than Murdoch, who inherited the business from his father. These two men are the heads of large media conglomerates (News Corp and Waystar Royco) and are conservatives close to the Republican Party. They have several divorces (4 marriages for Murdoch vs. 3 for Roy) and above all have several children who work in the family business.

As for the elder of the siblings, Kendall Roy is inspired by the eldest of the Murdochs: Lachlan Murdoch. Often touted as a potential successor to Rupert Murdoch, the latter has held several influential positions at News Corp since the age of eighteen. Lachlan left the family business for a while before returning to face some competition from his brothers.

As for the other Roy children, we find the Ugly Duckling romance. The youngest of the siblings collects a number of personal and professional escapades and surrounds himself with controversial political figures. He reminds us of James Murdoch, one of the youngest sons of the Murdoch family. This rebel would be involved in one of the biggest scandals the Murdochs have known.

In 2011, the News of the World, a subsidiary of News Corp, was involved in a wiretapping scandal involving British personalities. The British police and government, as well as the FBI, investigated the case, which seriously damaged James, who was in charge at the time, having lost his status as the favorite to succeed his father. James, a rebel of the Murdoch family, also has different political views. Quite centrist and liberal, James supported the presidential candidacy of Joe Bien.

Finally, Shiv Roy and Elizabeth Murdoch are both women who have thrived away from their father’s business. Shiv built his career in business and politics, while Elizabeth built her own television production companies, Shine Group (MasterChef) and Sister (Chernobyl).

Season 4 of Succession will be available starting March 27 on Prime Video with Warner Pass.
