James Gunn Reveals Why Henry Cavill Couldn’t Be Superman In DC’s New Age: Here’s What It Looks Like Now

With James Gunn’s reboot of the DC cinematic universe, Henry Cavill said goodbye to Superman with a touching message last year, and speculation about who will take up the red cape hasn’t stopped.

That’s why Gunn, who confirmed on Twitter on March 15, 2023 that he will direct “Superman: Legacy,” now has a preview of the audition process and what he’s looking for in the new version of Kal-El.

‘Superman Legacy’: James Gunn reveals what he’s looking for in Henry Cavill’s replacement

Although Jack Black was suggested for Superman and James Gunn approved, in fact, the director and head of DC Studios shared on social networks that no actor has been chosen for the role yet.

On March 22nd on Twitter, Gunn responded to a fan about a news story saying that casting for Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen had already begun and they were looking for actors in their twenties and of any ethnicity.

Gunn denied the claim that auditions have already begun for “Superman: Legacy,” revealing that DC has so far only shortlisted potential actors for the film, and that it’s not limited to people in their twenties.

“Superman: Legacy” will focus on a younger version of the superhero when he’s still a rookie reporter at the Daily Planet, but according to Gunn it won’t be an origin story. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2025.

Why Can’t Henry Cavill Be James Gunn’s Superman?

It’s true that fans have plenty of actors as their favorites to bring Superman to life in this new DC universe or even dream of Cavill being rehired, but James Gunn has already made it clear which profile he’s looking for.

Announcing that the new DC cinematic universe will begin with the chapter called “Gods and Monsters” and with the film “Superman: Legacy”, Gunn said that they want a younger Clark Kent.

Henry Cavill is still a favorite of many fans, but this year 2023 he turns 40, and since the new universe is planned for a decade, his version as a mature Superman would not fit the general story.

Gunn in February clarified a report from The Hollywood Reporter that claimed Superman would be around 25 years old in the new film. The director said that the only certainty is that he will be under 40 and maybe a little older than Batman.

“People are speculating about both ages. All I said was that Superman was under 40 and Batman could be a few years older than Superman.”
