Although many fans dream of a live-action “Dragon Ball Z” that faithfully shows the story created by Akira Toriyama, the author is working on different projects, such as adapting the “Sand Land” manga into a movie.
The adaptation produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima will have a style similar to “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” which is a computer animation that mimics the drawing style of an anime.
But fans won’t have to wait long to see Akira Toriyama’s new work in theaters, which in addition to ‘Dragon Ball’ includes ‘Dr. Fall’ and in-game art for ‘Dragon Quest’ and ‘Chrono Trigger’.

“Sand Land,” from the creator of “Dragon Ball,” already has a theatrical release date
The page for the “Sand Land Project” (as the film is currently called) was updated on March 22 to include a release date for the anime film, which could rival Studio Ghibli’s best films in the genre.
The website announced that the film will hit theaters on August 18, and the date has a very special meaning as it is the United Nations’ World Water Day and the plot of ‘Sand Land’ is closely related to the vital liquid.
The anime film is based on Toriyama’s first manga published after the completion of “Dragon Ball” in 2000. “Sand Land” only ran for one volume in “Weekly Shonen Jump” and was later published in a single book.
The manga ‘Sand Land’ has become a cult story in Japan, and since its publication, more and more fans have discovered it and considered it among Toriyama’s favorite stories.
While there is currently no news on when ‘Sand Land Project’ will be released outside of Japan, it is expected that the language localization process will not take long. Watch the first trailer for the film below:
What is ‘Sand Land’, the new one from the creator of ‘Dragon Ball’?
The story of “Sand Land” takes place in the distant future where war has destroyed the entire Earth and water is scarce (something similar to what we saw in the movie “Mad Max: Fury Road”).
In this world, a greedy king controls the entire water supply, so Sheriff Rao enlists the help of the demon king to find Ghost Lake, though the one who comes to his aid is Beelzebub’s son.
Along with the Thief’s assistant, the three embark on an adventure in the desert, facing dragons, bandits and the army of the evil king who controls the water.
