Tired of seeing the indomitable Gauls standing before him and trying to prove that the latter are not gods, Caesar decides to confront them: if they, like Hercules, manage to pass the 12 tests that are offered to them, he will stop fighting. them. But if they cannot, they will have to obey him.
Led by the phlegmatic Caius Pupus, Asterix and Obelix volunteer for this dangerous mission.
A true French institution, the mythical comics created by René Goschini and Albert Uderzo in 1959 have seen many adaptations, both on the small and the big screen. Long before flesh-and-blood actors Christian Clavier and Gérard Depardieu first appeared on film, Asterix and Obelix had many adventures in animation.
Billed as a “special edition” because it is not directly inspired by the original album, Les Douze Travaux d’Astérix was still a huge success when it was released in cinemas in 1976, drawing more than 2 million French moviegoers.
A particularly effective pitch and highlighted by the many trials that Asterix and Obelix must overcome during their journey, the film is above all extremely funny and even goes so far as to offer several anthology sequences. Take for example the unforgettable “The House That Makes You Mad”, a delicious parody of French administration, which we never tire of quoting even today when we find ourselves in bureaucratic trouble.
But among the film’s irresistible moments is a visit to the Belgian Mannekenpix restaurant, which tries in vain to satisfy Obelix, the Egyptian magician Iris and his famous appetite. “I’m a pig”, or the merry Reverend Summit. The unforgettable character of Caius Pupus and his reckless impudence, which serves as a guide for the two Gauls throughout the film.
With an average rating of 3,937 out of 5, The Twelve Labors is the best animated Asterix adaptation according to AlloCiné viewers, neck and neck with Secrets of the Magic Potion directed by Alexandre Astier and Louis Clich in 2018 and enjoying. From a very slightly lower rating, even if it is a few thousandths.

What will you like…
- The spirit of adventure that oozes out of the film and its hectic pace. 12 races in 82 minutes, which means there’s no time to get bored!
- The original, mythical and irreplaceable French voices of two Gauls: Roger Carell for Asterix and Jacques Morel for Obelix.
What could be bothering them…
- The seventh trial takes place in the monster’s lair, a sinister and unsettling environment capable of frightening even the youngest, even as Obelix finally swallows the threat.
- The final event, in which the two Gauls must spend the night on the confused plain. Quite painful at first, dead legionnaires who should have forbidden them to sleep, but very soon they laugh.
