The Brazilian president has canceled a state visit to Beijing after he was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia caused by a bacterium and influenza A virus on Thursday.
SPECIAL ENVOY TO BEIJING – The Chinese government announced on Sunday 26 that it was in contact with the Brazilian government to reschedule President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s state visit to the country. Lula was supposed to meet Chinese President Xi Jingping next Tuesday, the 28th, but he canceled the trip for health reasons.
China demonstrated for the first time on the cancellation of Lula’s visit. The Brazilian president was diagnosed on Thursday 23 with bronchopneumonia caused by a bacterium and the influenza A virus.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed, in a daily press conference, that it had been informed by the Lula government of the decision to postpone the state visit. “We understand and respect this decision,” a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said. “We will stay in contact with the Brazilian team regarding the visit.”
Beijing wished the Brazilian president a speedy recovery. “We send our warm thoughts to President Lula da Silva and wish him a speedy recovery,” the Chinese diplomat said.
The possibility of canceling the trip worried diplomats, businessmen and Brazilian authorities in Beijing. A day before departure, the Brazilian government communicated Lula’s state of health. More than 100 businessmen were already in the Chinese capital, in addition to the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro, who held institutional and business meetings beforehand.
Firstly, Palazzo Planalto postponed the departure of the retinue by one day, canceling the president’s participation in an academic and business forum. After a new medical evaluation, Lula was advised not to travel again until the end of the 7-day viral cycle, according to advisers to the president.
The bilateral meeting would take place on the fifth day of the cycle, which could pose health risks for both leaders. This was a concern of the Chinese government, according to diplomats and Lula aides. In addition to the meeting, they would also have dinner together, at a courtesy banquet offered by the Chinese government in honor of Lula.
