“Because of Gandalf’s voice I was thinking of a man who was doing too much, hence the exciting side of the voice”Explains Ian McKellen. “After a certain age the voice gets tired. To me he has to have an English accent like Tolkien. All the characters look like Tolkien. He belonged to the middle class who spoke like that, with a cultural voice, Oxford. I wanted to be a little older and a little primed.”
By studying his character traits and all his little habits, the actor directly based Gandalf’s character on the author, who was the first to bring him to life:
“When Tolkien read excerpts from The Lord of the Rings, he actually said so. “This,” McKellen continues. “So I was glad Gandalf was talking like him. I realized that very quickly. It seemed reasonable to me and it went well with the makeup as well.”
Remember, too, that in the French version of The Lord of the Rings lies behind the unforgettable voice of Gandalf the master Jean Piat. Mostly a theater actor, he is also known for the vocal interpretations of two great villains from the Disney studio: the brutal scar in The Lion King and the ruthless Frolo Notre Dame.
