Failed? Bolsonaro’s return to Brazil is overshadowed by the fiscal framework of the Lula government, shows Quaest

The announcement of the government’s new economic proposal had 10,000 more mentions than the return of the former president, who lost prominence on social media

The political scenario foreseen for last Thursday, the 30th, was one of narrative polarization. On the one hand, the ex-president’s return to Brazil Jair Bolsonaro (PL) after a three-month period in the United States; and on the other, Lula’s attempt to outshine his rival by making his first public appearance after being diagnosed with pneumonia. The Quaest company survey shows which side of the political polarization performed better.

According to the survey, with the disclosure of the tax framework, the government obtained 10,000 more mentions than the return of Bolsonaro, which reached about 483,000 mentions. The data also shows that most of them (44%) tested negative, for a total of 213 thousand.

The sorting algorithm of Wednesday it also showed the former CEO had 40% positive messages.

In addition to having reached a lower number of mentions than the Lula government, Bolsonaro’s arrival in the country has also reached a lower level than other episodes of great repercussion involving the former president. According to the survey, on September 7, 2022, it mobilized nearly 680,000 mentions, 45% of which were positive. In his trip to the United States, the citations reached 520,000, of which 40% were positive. The research then concludes that Bolsonaro has lost prominence on social networks, while the comparison between the events shows a scenario of loss of volume of publications on the former president.

The return of Bolsonaro

Bolsonaro returned to the country with a speech as opposition leader, even if he received a lower than expected reception at Brasilia airport. Shortly after landing, he criticized the president Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva stating that PT members “will not do as they please with the fate of our nation”.

Lula appointed the minister of the Secretariat for institutional relations, Alexander Padilha (PT), to comment on the return of the former president. According to Padilha, the reception staged by Bolsonaro supporters has “failed”, a term commonly used on social media to refer to frustrating events or events that did not meet expectations.

The government’s other move was to use the same day of the former president’s return to present the government’s proposal for a new fiscal peg to replace the spending ceiling, which since 2017 has linked spending growth to inflation. The market was eagerly awaiting this new measure.
