The most hated actor of “Star Wars” is back in “The Mandalorian”: his tragic story after criticism

Although in ‘The Mandalorian’ Grog or Baby Yoda is loved by everyone, the little character is surrounded by mystery

For example, many have wondered where Grog is in the Star Wars sequels and how Order 66 was able to escape from where the Jedi died when attacked by the clone army.

“The Mandalorian” in its 3rd season has already answered the last question and not only was it possible to find out how Grogu escaped, but fans were also happy to know that the Jedi who saved his life is played by Ahmed Best, the actor by Jar Jar. Bink.

Star Wars’ most hated actor returns to save Grog: his sad story

In the chapter “The Foundling” of “The Mandalorian” the flashback to Order 66 in the Jedi Temple shows that Grogu was saved by the Jedi master Kelleran Beq, who is embodied by an old acquaintance in “Star Wars”.

In 1999, in “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” Ahmed Best made his film debut by lending his voice and as a motion actor for Jar Jar Binks. However, his character was very poorly received.

Critics and fans considered it one of the worst to appear in “Star Wars” and just like Jake Lloyd (Anakin Skywalker as a child), his life was greatly affected.

Ahmed Best appeared in the prequel trilogy as Jar Jar and even starred as the character Achk Med-Beq in Attack of the Clones. But even so, after the first installment, their participation was less and less.

Best left the stage, and in a June 2017 interview with Wired, he confessed that the comments he received as Jar Jar ranged from people telling him he had ruined his childhood to much more serious.

“I received death threats online. People came up to me and said, “You ruined my childhood.” That’s hard for a 25-year-old to hear.”

The actor confessed that he was one of the cast members who went through the worst after the films, since his career as a movie star seemed to be over with his debut itself.

“You feel success and failure at the same time. I was looking at the end of my career before it started. There were a lot of tears, a lot of pain, a lot of swearing that I had to deal with. Everyone else moved on. Everything else worked. All others were accepted by the spirit of the times.’

‘Star Wars’: Ahmed Best almost killed himself due to criticism

The depression was so great that many years later the complaints continued to plague him and in July 2018 he shared a photo on Twitter with his son on a bridge where he contemplated suicide.

“20 years ago next year I faced a media backlash that still affects my career today. This was the place where I almost ended my life. It’s still hard to talk about it. I survived and now this little one is my gift to live for.”

In an interview with YouTube channel Participant in January 2019, Amed opened up about his survival story even more, admitting that he didn’t jump off the Brooklyn Bridge just because a flash made him doubt his decision.

“I was lonely and depressed. Hard. It was broken. The only thing I could think of to make me feel better was to cross the Brooklyn Bridge. But this time, when I crossed the bridge, I didn’t see the lights of Manhattan. I did not see anything; just a mist. I felt tired of having to explain myself. I felt tired of having to defend myself and my work. I felt tired of fighting against racism and racial stereotypes.

Best managed to overcome the criticism and even returned to the franchise in the children’s show “Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge” in 2020, where he played the role of Jedi master Kelleran Beq (the same one who saves Grogu in “The Mandalorian”).

But his return was not easy, when speaking to the official “Star Wars” page in March 2023, Best commented that when he received the offer he had to think a lot about everything that had happened.

“I’ve been in the Star Wars world for a long time and my story is a rollercoaster of emotions. So returning to ‘Star Wars’ was not an easy decision for me. It wasn’t something he could say yes to right away. I had to marinate it a bit.”

But this time his role in ‘Star Wars’ was applauded, fans even apologized for criticism in the past and many celebrated his triumphant return after all he had been through.
