Salary increase: the expert explains how to request it


Want a raise at work? Tips for asking your boss for a higher salary




Most people seek professional fulfillment. And if it can be accompanied by a salary that lives up to the expectations of the workers and the delivery they give to the company, even better. But how to get the raise request right?

According to career management specialist and professor of people management at the Álvares Penteado School of Commerce Foundation (FECAP), Marcelo Treff, the best time to ask a manager for a raise is after positive feedback, resulting from the performance appraisal process.

“In companies with bonus policies (salaries and benefits) and career policies (possibility of ascent and succession process), increases are usually linked to performance, results or potential assessment processes. If the employee performs well at work, the company is unlikely to deny him a raise,” says the professor.

The request must be made impersonally

The specialist adds that the employee seeking a promotion or salary increase must know the company’s career and salary policy and that the request must be made impersonally and based on facts.

“The recommendation is that the worker justifies the request without arguing personal problems. Justifying the request by comparing yourself to colleagues is frowned upon, it is an invitation to get the request wrong,” says Treff.

If the worker performs well, a pay raise can bring a feeling of recognition and value. But, in cases where this recognition doesn’t come, the feeling is exactly the opposite: injustice and lack of appreciation.

“It is important to be prepared for both scenarios. But above all, be aware of your possibilities and the company you work for,” he recommends.
