‘Smiley’: First images of Netflix’s new LGTB series

Miki Esparbé, Carlos Cuevas, Pepón Nieto and Meritxell Calvo lead the cast of the adaptation of Guillem Clua’s play.

In November 2012, Àlex and Bruno, the protagonists of ‘Smiley’, the play written by Guillem Clua, had their first kiss in a small theater in Barcelona. After jumping to commercial theaters in the city, in 2015 it arrived in Madrid to become a little gem that has already been covered in countries such as Germany, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Chile, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, Miami, New York, Colombia, Australia and Singapore. Now, it is Netflix that will turn this story into a television series with a cast led by Miki Esparbe (The innocent, Kings of the night), Carlos Cuevas (Someone has to die, Merlí), Pepón Grandson (30 coins, Paco’s men), Meritxell Calvo (Love is forever, Beats), Giannina Fruttero (The pack, Emma), Eduardo Lloveras (Intimacy, The one), Ruth Llopis (During the storm, Valeria) Y Ramon Pujol (Blind to dating, The perfume: story of a murderer).

The series, directed by Marta Pahissa and David M. Porras, produced by Minoría Absoluta and whose filming has already started in Barcelona, tells the story of Álex (Carlos Cuevas), a young man who has just had a heartbreak. He had illusions with a boy who, after a few weeks, has made him a ghosting manual. And that doesn’t sit well with him. He picks up the phone and prepares to ask for explanations with a voice message that will have the most unexpected consequences… because he ends up sending it by mistake to Bruno (Miki Esparbé), whom he doesn’t know at all. That innocent first mistake is the first in a chain of events that will change the lives of Àlex and Bruno forever.

“’Smiley’ It is the greatest love story I have ever lived. And as is often the case with love stories, it started small and has grown over the years to become something that has changed my life. In all this time, ‘Smiley’ has touched the soul of thousands of people in theaters around the world and it makes me very happy that it can continue to do so from a platform as proud of diversity as Netflix. Not only because the story of Álex and Bruno will reach millions more people, but because the two will be accompanied by a whole new universe of LGTBI love stories. That’s why I say that ‘Smiley’ is my greatest love story. And the best thing is that it has only just begun”, he explains. Guillem Cluáauthor and showrunner of the series.
