Mattarella calls for a ‘reflection’ on wars of aggression

The President has opened the university year in Ferrara

The president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, opened the academic year of a university in Ferrara this Tuesday (4) and asked the institutions to “reflect” on the wars of aggression, in particular the one underway in Ukraine.

“All over the world, universities are called to elaborate reflections adapted to the conditions we have, to the mutations that exist, to the new scenarios. War of aggression, annexation of territories or fierce competition on marginal aspects”, he told students and professors of the institution which will turn 632 in 2023.

According to Mattarella, “these are the relevant aspects that will mark the world of the future” and, therefore, educational institutions must “invite the world to reflect”.

“And they too must be at the forefront of these reflections, play this role: reflect to explore scenarios and indicate paths that need to be addressed. This is the world that young people will face and this is the world that universities must help them interpret and govern,” she added.
