In its 19 years of existence, Grey’s Anatomy has already been the subject of two spin-offs: Private Practice and Station 19. The first, which aired from 2007 to 2013, revolved around the character of Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) and followed her adventures in St. Santa Monica, California, where he worked at a clinic specializing in fertility and alternative medicine.
The second, still airing on ABC, follows members of the Seattle firehouse where Ben Warren (Jason George), husband of Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), works. But since Station 19 launched in 2017, no more Grey’s Anatomy spin-offs have been announced.
By the time Jesse Williams left in the middle of Season 17, there were many rumors of a spin-off series centered around Jackson and April (Sarah Drew). But while the actors weren’t against the story surrounding “April” developing in their own fiction, Jesse Williams, who left Grey’s Anatomy to start new projects, expressed some reservations.
One thing is for sure, discussions around a new spin-off have been going on for several years. In May 2021, Krista Vernoff, showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, and ABC announced that they were working on a new series that would stem from the Grey’s Anatomy universe.
“Krista and her team are exploring ideas to see what that might look like. They’re working on themes and I can’t wait for the next phase of Grey’s Anatomy when we find the right oneJohnny Davis, president of ABC Signature, told the American website Deadline.
“We are going to create the next series, which will also last 18 years. We are working on it right now and there are no better brains than Krista and Shonda..”
A military medicine spinoff?
If the project doesn’t seem to be making much progress at the moment, Kevin McKidd, who has been in camp on Dr. Hunt since Season 5, shared an idea during a panel at PaleyFest that might spark Shonda Rhimes.
When asked about a potential spin-off, the actor replied that there would be one. “There is still a lot to do around the lives of these characters“, he explained. “We have expanded our universe to the 19th station.”
“I don’t understand why we couldn’t extend this further. I don’t know exactly how – perhaps by studying the terrain of military medicine – but there can definitely be something fun and decisive about this.“. To be continued…
Catch the finale of Grey’s Anatomy season 18 on Wednesday, April 12 at 9:10pm on TF1.
