‘Transatlantic’, the new Netflix series about World War II from the creator of ‘Unorthodox’

Anna Winger, the creator of ‘Unorthodox’, returns with another adaptation that transports us to a rescue operation in 1940 France.

Netflix continues to show new projects and we already know that it does not stop even on holidays. Among the series that will arrive on the platform in 2023, there is a new title that aims to be one of the great successes of this year. We are talking about ‘Transatlantic’.

The series is created by Anna Winger, creator of ‘Unorthodox’, which centered its story on a young Orthodox Jew who decides to leave her arranged marriage and her strict religious community in New York and heads to Berlin, where her mother lives. The plot adapted the memoirs of Deborah Feldman. The miniseries made up of four chapters is not today one of the emblematic works of the streaming giant, but it was quite popular given its premiere in the spring of 2020, during the period of the pandemic.

Now Winger returns with another adaptation for the small small screen: it is the book ‘The Flight Portfolio’, by Julie Orringer, a new miniseries made up of seven episodes set in World War II and also based on true events.

This drama takes us to the Europe of the middle of the last century and is based on the real events that occurred in the Emergency Rescue Committee of France. Set in the city of Marseille in the 1940s, it narrates the lives of Varian Fry and Mary Jayne Gold, who will risk their lives to help more than two thousand refugees escape from Nazi-occupied French lands.

Varian Fry traveled to the French city with three thousand dollars and a long list of artists and writers -among them Hannah Arendt, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp or Marc Chagall- who were in danger, whom he hoped to help escape. But he stayed for more than a year, working to obtain false documentation, raise emergency funds and organize routes through Spain and Portugal, where the refugees would leave for the United States or places of safety.

Although no further details of its plot can be anticipated, everything indicates that ‘Transatlantic’ will be one of the best period series to travel to the past.
