‘Cruel Intentions’, the youth classic of the 90s, prepares a remake for television

A television adaptation of ‘Cruel Intentions’ will arrive through Amazon, as recently confirmed, Variety.

Sources say it will be an eight episode serieswhich will adapt the story of the film, and will be broadcast through the platform of streaming free from amazon, Freevee.

The series, like the film classic on which it is based, will follow two ruthless stepbrothers who will do their best to stay at the top of the social pyramid.. In this case, they will focus on the hierarchies established by the sororities of the University of Washington DC in which they study. After a brutal incident that affects this entire system, they will do whatever it takes to preserve their power and reputation, getting to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States.

Years ago, in 2016, NBC has already arranged the production of a pilot episode for a sequel to the film. In it, Sarah Michelle Gellar, one of the leading actresses of the original film, could be seen reprising her role as Kathryn Merteuil. However, this project did not come to fruition.

On the other hand, the FOX network also tried to develop a sequel series, which failed to air. 3 episodes were filmed, which ended up coming together to produce ‘Cruel Intentions 2’ (2001), which was not shown in theaters. Three years later, in 2004, another film without theatrical distribution (straight to video) was made, entitled ‘Cruel Intentions 3’.

The new series is said to be scripted and executive produced by Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman.

In recent weeks, the news about remakes of movie classics have been crowding together one after another. The last one, not very well received by a large number of fans, was the new adaptation, in series format, of the ‘Harry Potter’ novels.

Will we be facing a widespread drought of ideas in the audiovisual industry? Let’s hope not. Let’s hope it’s just nostalgia.
