How far will you go when angry? Two characters from the new Netflix series Relentless are willing to go to great lengths to satisfy their uncontrollable urge to rage. It all starts when Danny and Amy almost run into each other in the parking lot.
Paradoxically, a botched accident unleashes all the rage contained in each of the two characters at the end of their life’s rope. They then embark on a nervous chase down the road à la Fast and Furious in hopes of scaring each other and possibly crashing into each other. Finally, it is he who manages to get angry.

But the game is far from over. Both will be able to find each other, gather information about their lives, destroy each other socially and ruin their lives when unimaginable situations arise.
We owe it to Lee Sung-Jin, screenwriter of Philadelphia, 2 Broke Girls and Tuca & Bertie, who was inspired by a crash he experienced to put his rage on paper , which he experienced then. With nearly fifteen years of experience writing comedy, Lee Sung-jin paints portraits of men and women on the brink of a nervous breakdown with delicious sarcasm and disturbing relevance.

The series aptly and with spicy black humor depicts the multitude of feelings between anger, depression, grief, bereavement, betrayal, helplessness and disappointment. Rational or not, the characters’ feelings are rooted in difficult pasts—often related to family and heavy cultural heritage—and are constructed enough to make us empathize with them.
The incredible performances by Ali Wong and Steven Yeun are obviously plentiful, but the performances of the actors playing the actors are just as remarkable. Ten episodes of about thirty minutes each offer a scathing critique of itAmerican dreamDive into American-South Korean culture between religion and social and family pressures, sharp comedy, delicious twists and deep and confusing sensitivity.
Indeed, if Acharnés is built as a burlesque mural that plays the codes of comedy thanks to its breathless and tentative rhythm, it also touches on drama thanks to a stunning twist towards the end of the series and several suspended moments of deep humanity.
Even if the Netflix series remains a delicious mix of genres, especially with its neat and colorful aesthetic and use of nostalgic pop music that contrasts wonderfully with the current game, it’s also a testament to a certain generational malaise that’s eating away at us. As much as it makes us grow, we can all identify with it.
Relentless is available in its entirety on Netflix.
