Cannes 2023: Maven and Johnny Depp at the opening of the festival with Jean du Barry

Johnny Depp at the Cannes Film Festival! Jeanne du Barry, directed by Maïwenn and in which the Hollywood star glides in the dress of Louis XV, will open the 76th edition on Tuesday, May 16. A world premiere feature film about the life, rise and fall of the king’s favorite will be released in French cinemas the same day.

In the casting of Jeanne du Barry, in addition to Maven and Johnny Depp in the two main roles, we find in particular Benjamin Laverne, Melville Pupo, Pierre Richard, Pascal Gregory and India Hair.

Jeanne du Barry tells the story of Jeanne Wobernier (Maïwenn), a people’s daughter with a desire to rise socially, who uses her charm to escape from her situation. Her lover, the Comte du Barry, who had become very rich thanks to Jeanne’s lucrative gallantry, wanted to present her to the king. He arranged the meeting through the influential Duke of Richelieu. It exceeds her expectations: this love at first sight between Louis XV (Johnny Depp) and Jeanne…

But the king is still married, and his daughters are on guard to prevent their father from breaking the rules set by the clergy and the monarchy. However, with Jeanne, Louis XV rediscovered his zest for life – so much so that he could no longer live without her and decided to make her his official favourite. Scandal: No one wants a street girl in court.

Maven, who is signing her sixth feature with Jean du Barry, is already a regular at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2011, he received the Jury Prize for the film Polisse. Four years later, she returned to official selection with Mon Roi, for which Emmanuelle Bercot won Best Actress.
