After its theatrical debut, I Wanna Dance with Somebody: The Whitney Houston Story arrives on HBO Max on April 7.
After spending one season in Brazilian cinemas, the film I Want To Dance With Someone – The Whitney Houston Story I finally got a premiere date on streams. The film, starring Naomi Ackie, comes to HBO Max on Fridays, April 7th.
Directed by Kasi Lemmons, the biopic portrays the life and work of Whitney, who went on to become one of the world’s leading singers. In nearly two and a half hours on screen, audiences will see from the singer’s humble beginnings to the moment she is discovered by a record company and becomes one of the big international stars of the 80s.
To tell this story, in addition to Naomi, the film features Nafessa Williams, Ashton Sanders, Stanley Tucci, Tamara Tunie, Bria Danielle, among others. Academy Award nominee Antonhy McCarten wrote the screenplay and famed music producer Clive Davis produced.
The success of I Wanna Dance with Somebody
Despite not garnering much critical acclaim and garnering only 44% critical acclaim on the Rotten Tomatoes website, the Whitney Houston film was liked (and very much) by the general public. On the same site, it got 92% positive ratings from viewers. The film’s title song also grew over 625% in streaming audio, according to the Deezer platform.

The consensus of viewers is that actress Naomi Ackie has done a great job and that even longtime fans of the singer will be able to learn something about her in the film.
The soundtrack is available on digital platforms
It was not only the story of the biopic that captured the audience, the soundtrack, which plays a vital role in the feature film, also captured the attention of the viewers, and can now be heard in the major audio platforms.
The album, released by RCA Records, has 35 tracks, 14 of which are new recordings. Among the songs are remixed versions of hits, collaborations with guest artists and new songs. It’s worth mentioning, however, that none of the songs are sung by Ackie, since she doesn’t sing on stage.
