The new Netflix series produced by A24 has won over critics and audiences, but there is one scene that is more controversial than the rest: “She is hiding.”
Spoilers for season 1 of ‘Bronca’ below
‘Bronca’ star Ali Wong has brought to light and examined one of the most surprising scenes from the Netflix series. The 10-episode drama follows the aftermath of an angry roadside incident between two strangers, Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Ali Wong), which leads to their lives slowly falling apart.
Amy is stuck in a stale marriage that only fractures more as she becomes obsessed with her grudge against Danny. As her life spirals out of control, she has a sexual encounter with a much older man. While both stars felt that the psychological reasons behind Amy’s affair can only be explained by ‘Bronca’ creator Lee Sung Jin, Wong spoke with Digital Spy about his own justifications for the character.
It’s just that Amy’s so embarrassed about… When she says at the end, ‘I don’t want anyone to see me,’ you know, a lot of people desperately want to be seen, and she’s like, ‘Oh no, I really don’t want people to see me. see me’. That’s one of those things she doesn’t want people to see, you know? She’s done something she wouldn’t even tell her best friend about, and she probably wouldn’t even write in a journal because she’d be too afraid someone would end up reading it and finding out, which is why she has the pillow over her head.
He is hiding. And even in her wardrobe, Amy would never wear something like that. She wears all those creams, neutrals, and whites, she’s hiding. That’s it, all part of it.
Viewers gain insight throughout the series into the complex ways Amy thinks about sex, including a shocking scene where she masturbates with a gun.
“I wouldn’t even call it problematic,” Wong argued. “She’d just say it is what it is. But for her the key is that she’s not comfortable with anyone watching her, you know?”
The first season of ‘Bronca’ is now available on Netflix.
