Five Devils with Adele Exarchopoulos, released on August 31st and screened during Directors’ Monday at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, is unlike anything you’ve seen before.
An intimate and fantastical drama, the film tells the story of Vicky, a strange and lonely little girl who has a gift: she can smell and reproduce any scent she chooses, which she collects in carefully labeled jars. He secretly picked up the scent of his mother, for whom he has a mad, almost morbid love. One day, Julia, their father’s sister, enters their lives. Vicki begins to develop her scent. He is then transported into dark and magical memories where he discovers the secrets of his village, his family and his own existence.
The film’s co-writer and director, Lea Missius, who was also nominated at Cannes for the film, was recently interviewed by TheWrap as the film is released on a limited basis in the US on March 24th and will be available on Mubi for American. The audience, by the way, from May 12.
Asked about his next film, the filmmaker said he doesn’t know what his next project will be, which will be a surprise, one that keeps changing his mind. When asked if she wants to make a Marvel movie, the young woman doesn’t say no, but one thing is clear: she won’t be doing it in France.
“I don’t know the Marvel question. Of course, I would love to do something like that, something more resourceful, in terms of putting together a bigger show and maybe a Marvel movie. But if I do, it can’t be in France. Because I think it would be a bit silly to shoot a Marvel movie in France. It’s never a good idea to imitate cinema that comes from somewhere else, especially not from the United States. And I get the impression that when we in France want to do something inspired by Marvel movies, it ends badly because we’re not Americans. If I want to do something like that, I have to go to the States and work there, I think.“
A woman behind the camera and a French woman who moves the cinema? Marvel Studios, it’s up to you!
