Israel carries out retaliatory attacks in Syria

The IDF blames the Palestinians and the Syrian state for launching missiles against the Golan region and reacts, in the latest episode of the escalation of violence in the Middle East. Tension on the Israeli-Lebanese border is also growing: the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out this Sunday (09/04) two series of attacks against targets in Syria, in retaliation for the launch of six missiles on the Golan Heights by a militant group the night before. A drone was also used.

According to the military, Israel holds “the Syrian state responsible for all activities taking place within its territory” and will not allow any attempt to violate its sovereignty, they added. The Golan Heights, bordering Lebanon, is a strategic region. Israel captured parts of it from Syria in 1967 and later annexed it.

In yesterday’s unclaimed attack, at least one of the six rockets was intercepted by Israeli anti-aircraft systems and two landed in uninhabited areas. Blaming the fire on “Palestinians,” the IDF has also retaliated with offensives against the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.

It is the latest episode of the escalation of violence in the Middle East in recent days. On Friday, three died in two anti-Israel attacks. The day before, about 30 missiles were fired from Lebanon towards Israel, causing one casualty and material damage. An alleged attack in Tel-Aviv also left one dead and five wounded.

Since 2006, such violence has not been recorded on the Israeli-Lebanese front. The two countries are technically at war after several conflicts. A ceasefire line in southern Lebanon is controlled by the United Nations Interim Force (FINUL).

Israel has stepped up offensives against Syria by targeting the positions of groups linked to Iran, its number one enemy. Syrian authorities record ten Israeli attacks in 2023, in which both their soldiers and Iranian civilians and military advisers died.
