“Too bad it will never see the light of day”
The ‘Barbie’ trailer nearly broke the internet when it dropped earlier last week. A fact that could have surprised the Oscar-nominated actress who stars in the film, margot robbieconsidering that there was a time when thought no Hollywood studio would want to make this satirical comedy. In a recent interview with BAFTA (via IndieWire), Robbie revealed that his first reaction upon reading the script for Barbie, written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, was disbelief that the movie was being made.. And it is that he already assured at the end of 2020 that the film was going to be very different.
“The first time I read the ‘Barbie’ script, my reaction was: ‘Oh! This is so good. Too bad it will never see the light of day because they will never let us make this movie.said Robbie. “But they did.” Asked for more details about the mysterious script, Robbie said, “I can’t tell you!” So you have to wait until its release to find out what it’s about.
‘Barbie’ stars Robbie as the eponymous doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The two characters find themselves traveling from Barbie’s dreamland to the real world, though why and what happens there remains a secret.. Several Barbie and Ken actors appear in the film (including Emma Mackey, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir and more), while Will Ferrell plays the CEO of Mattel. Isn’t there curiosity to know what will happen?
Liu said in an interview last year that he knew almost nothing about the movie “Barbie” when he agreed to audition for a role. The actor decided to throw his name into the picture for a role after a junior agent from his agency told him that Gerwig and Baumbach’s script for the film was one of the best he had ever read. “He literally said this verbatim,” Liu said. “He said: ‘If I could bet my career on one script, it’s the ‘Barbie’ script. I really think you should’Liu described the story as “wild” and “incredibly unique,” adding: “I wish I could show you what we do every day because it’s crazy.”
Robbie, on the other hand, went from doubting that “Barbie” could ever be made to being overwhelmed by the constant buzz and social media attention the movie drew while filming scenes in Los Angeles last year. “I can’t tell you how mortified we were,” Robbie told Jimmy Fallon last year about the viral attention his ‘Barbie’ set photos received on social media, the ones in which the couple skated through Los Angeles. “It looks like we’re laughing and having fun, but we’re dying inside. Dying. I thought, this is the most humiliating moment of my life.”
Asked if he ever thought ‘Barbie’ set photos would dominate the internet the way they did, Robbie replied: “No! I mean, I knew we had some locations to shoot in Los Angeles. I knew that once you were doing exteriors, we were going to be photographed. There’s probably going to be a small crowd of people who would notice because, you know, we were kind of showing off in those costumes. We knew there was going to be a little bit of attention, but not how it happened.”
‘Barbie’ will hit theaters on July 21. Below you can see the trailer.
