Success in Rio, the montage featuring Abba’s songs arrives in São Paulo in July, for a short season
When they announced they were putting together a new version of the musical Oh mama!directors and producers Carl Moller AND Claudius Botello heard the same comment: “Ah, that show with Abba songs and stupid lyrics.” “It’s a mistake, because it’s an intelligent drama that bets on female autonomy, both for the mother and for the daughter,” comments Möeller. “And because the plot takes place over 48 hours, the humor and drama are well dosed in the text,” Botelho completes. After a successful season in Rio, Oh mama! arrives in São Paulo for a short season at Vibra São Paulo, from 21 to 28 July.
Indeed, since its premiere in London in 1999, the musical has enjoyed worldwide success thanks to the joy it conveys to the audience, the spectacular soundtrack (classics from Abba AS Dancing queen, Oh mama, Winner takes all, Money money moneyamong others), the fact that it celebrates second chances and is set on a Greek island.
Dream
It is precisely in this sunny environment that Donna’s story takes place (Claudia Netto), who took refuge in this paradisiacal region, where he raised his daughter Sophie (Maria Brazil), fruit of a fleeting passion during the hangover of the hippie dream of peace and love. The girl is marrying Sly (Diego Montez) and has a dream: Sophie grew up without her father and, now, she has discovered in her mother’s old diary three possible alternative candidates, who are Sam Carmichael (Sergio Menez), Harry Brilliant (Andre Dias) and Bill Austin (Renato Rabello). To this end, he writes letters to the three, calling them to the island. In this way he hopes to identify the father as soon as he appears in front of him, but it is not so.
Initially uneasy with the surprising situation of having to deal with three moments from her past at the same time, Donna seeks support from two childhood friends, Tanya (Maria Clare Guiros) and Pink (gottsha). Not being forced to rigidly follow the original model, Möeller and Botelho were able to explore topics that have acquired greater importance today, such as women’s emancipation and sexual freedom.
“Donna didn’t need a male presence to raise her daughter,” notes Möeller who, during the pandemic, returned to painting and developing models and script studies, diving back into art direction, a role she has never stopped developing throughout its Shows. “She’s a very modern mother, because she tells her daughter not to get married and live life, be adventurous.”
Focus
“With that, the show begins with the focus on Donna and then looks at Sophie, two women preaching for freedom at different times,” completes Botelho – he signed the edited version in 2010. he translated the songs that help narrate the plot . “I tried to enhance some sentences to highlight the poetry of the text.” The creative freedom is the result of the exit from rigidly following the English original, which gives a special touch to the production, which marks the reunion of the duo with the producer Aventura, of Aniela Jordan and Luiz Calainho.
“Another important factor is that skin color doesn’t matter, hence the important presence of a black actor, like Sérgio,” comments Claudia. “When I go on stage, I don’t care if I’m of African descent,” she says.
