Without Vini Jr., Real Madrid beat Cadiz and close the gap from leaders Barcelona to Espanyol

Real Madrid beat Cadiz without much difficulty this Saturday afternoon, 2-0, away from home, in a match played at the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium. The merengue team dominated, costing the goals to swing, but built the scoreboard in the second half.

The merengue team had a significant embezzlement for the duel: Vinicius Júnior. The Brazilian was saved by coach Carlo Ancelotti for the succession of matches and was not even entered. The attacking trio, therefore, consisted of Rodrygo, Benzema and Asensio.

Even without the star, Madrid claimed their 19th Spanish league win and closed the gap on competition leaders Barcelona. Barça’s lead at the top of the competition is now back to ten points.

The Catalan team, however, can still open three more points on their rival. For that to happen, just beat Getafe this Sunday morning, at 11:15 (Brasilia time).

Away from the national title, Real Madrid are back on the field next Tuesday to face Chelsea, in London, at 4pm, for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. In the first leg, the Spaniards started leading 2-0.

How was the game?

The first dangerous chance of the match, to everyone’s surprise, came from Cadiz. The Uruguayan Espino received it on the left wing, invaded the area and crossed, hitting goalkeeper Courtois’ post. Real Madrid responded in the 15th minute, with a shot from Asensio which ended up in the hands of David Gil.

At 17, it was Benzema’s turn to strike with the outside of his foot and see David Gil make a new save. The Frenchman nearly took the lead in the 34th minute, after a great individual action by Rodrygo, who left the task of kicking the crossbar to the number 9.

Rodrygo also came close to scoring in the 39th minute, after dribbling inside the area and forcing Gil to work again.

Returning from half-time, the Brazilian wasted a good one-on-one opportunity with David Gil, but kicked the goalkeeper high. In the 11th minute Asensio makes a good play on the left and rolls for Rodrygo, in the centre, but the attacker sends out into the small area, practically without a goalkeeper.

However, Real arrived dangerous in the 12th minute, following a submission by Valverde, and in the 17th minute, with a new shot by Benzema that exploded over the crossbar, before taking the lead. The first goal came in the 26th minute, with a fine low shot by Nacho Fernández, from outside the area, for a corner.

And it didn’t take long for meringues to ramp up the edge. In the 29th minute Valverde advances and leaves it to Asensio, who hits the left corner to score the double.
