“We haven’t told the whole story. What happens when you go off the ‘Yellow Brick Road’? Here’s a first look at the #WickedMovie…currently set in Oz.”
A hit musical
Created in 2003 by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holtzman (who wrote the feature film), the musical was inspired by the novel by Gregory Maguire.Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West“Re-reading a famous book”The witch of the day By L. Frank Baum.
The show has been a huge success and has been sold out for 20 years. It made $1 billion on Broadway alone, and almost 5 billion dollars worldwide where it was seen by 65 million people. Wicked is one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals behind The Phantom of the Opera (1988), Chicago (1996) and The Lion King (1997). Suffice it to say, Universal is expecting a lot from this big screen adaptation.
12 years into the project, the film adaptation of this hit is directed by John M. Chu, Sexy Dance 2 and 3, Elusive 2 or Where We Come From. Before that, the project was in the hands of Ryan Murphy, James Mangold, Rob Marshall and even JJ Abrams.
Wicked tells the story of what happened in the world of Oz long before Dorothy arrived. At first rivals, the green and intelligent Elphaba befriends the blond and bushy Glinda. But the world decides that these two wizards must face each other. The musical tells the story of the Wizard of Oz from a different angle.
Also starring Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum, Wicked will be released in 2 parts. The first will hit theaters from December 4, 2024, and the second will hit theaters a year later, on December 24, 2025.
Let’s remind, in 2013, Sam Raimi filmed his adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s novel The Fantastic World of Oz starring Michelle Williams and Mila Kunis.
