The director hinted at the possible plot in his filmography.
It’s only been nine years since Boyhood: From Childhood to Youth arrived in cinemas around the world with an extremely captivating narrative: for 12 years, director Richard Linklater shot the film gradually, annually accompanying the growth of his protagonist played by Ellar Coltrane.
Next to the baby couple in front of the camera – literally! – is a captivating cast, led by Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette. This is one of the few, if not the only, conspiracy to address the issue so head-on.
In a recent interview with empire, during the launch of a new edition of the feature film, the director reflected on the project and also gave hints about his next productions. Maybe there’s room to continue Mason Jr.’s story from a new point of view.
“There were things we could have done – [mas] we just didn’t, ”he said. For all we know, we could start at 30 or so. Who the hell knows?”
Even if the format resembles the original, the idea of starting a sequel after the change that lasts from the 1930s to the 1940s can have an exciting new effect on the public eye. The previous plot ends when the protagonist arrives at college and, according to the director, the clues of this period are in other productions of his filmography.
“I know what happened next – in fact, it’s depicted in several movies I’ve done. [ sobre] college life… Before Sunrise or Young, Crazy and Rebellious – this movie starts with a guy who gets to college.”
During the conversation, Linklater again mentioned that he hasn’t revisited the film since its debut nearly a decade ago. “Breathe again for me,” he says. “It hasn’t been calcified for a while. I mean, it’s a paper from 2002 to 2013, but it was never just about that. My focus there, probably my biggest project in this world, was — in a funny, hopefully watchable way – to show what life was like, you know? What it was like to be human at any time”.
His plan is to review the film when the film has completed 12 years of release, the same period it was produced. “Give it a few more years, and then I’ll look at it again, see how it resonates in my head,” she says. “But it’s been a great experience and we’ve achieved what we set out to do. Then you let it go and you feel good.”
