The president also condemned the new nationalist crimes
The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, said this Wednesday (19), during a speech in the Polish city of Krakow, that the European Union “should not follow” the agenda defined by other countries or by international situations.
According to the rep, “every day is a new test” for the block.
“But it would be completely inappropriate to think of a Europe that is the result of a spasmodic race to face problems dictated by others, in an international framework decided by others. In other words, the need to make Europe a protagonist is not answered adequate in the vision of a Union as a temporary and changeable sum of national moods and interests, therefore, by definition, perennially unstable”, said the Italian leader.
The head of state also affirmed that it is necessary “to look at how to make the perspective of the strategic autonomy of the European Union concrete, at a level that can ensure a dissuasive attitude, aware that this means strengthening – and not weakening – our alliances, a strong point of our defense system”.
Mattarella also recalled that Poland commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising and added that “the memory of that barbarism remains indelible in our minds and hearts”, underlining that Italy is also on the side of this cause.
Speaking of the war in Ukraine, the president urged “no one to remain indifferent to the brutal aggression of Russia”, underlining that the Ukrainians have a “sovereign, free, democratic” country.
“The population is targeted by targeted attacks and criminals who kill with savagery, ruthlessly targeting Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure to leave the population frozen and clueless. Today Europe is witnessing crimes resulting from a renewed nationalist exasperation, which wants to violate borders, conquer territorial spaces by claiming the presence of population groups belonging to the same culture”, she highlighted.
